Sharon James is a second-generation West Indian. Originally from London, now based in Dorset.  She has a BA Hons in Fine Art Printmaking at Loughborough. She has an MA in Printmaking from Camberwell School of Art.

After a successful career as a lecturer in Art and Design, and then ten years as a gallery owner, she is now a full-time artist. Between the school run.

Sharon is a multidisciplinary artist. Her practice has evolved since the arrival of her three children. Her practice has focused on painting and drawing using many tools including digital. Her current studio was formerly her art gallery.

Her life has always provided a rich seam that she has referenced throughout her art career, recording moments of the present to create a physical living archive for my children.

“Documenting my family history and our shared history. Investigating her experience of being a black gay woman, a mother, heritage, current affairs and the impact they have on her own life.”

The intensity of these investigations needs to be sublimated. She achieves this by other voyages of discovery and different challenges, through exploring light, composition, and colour. This work can be abstract or figurative.

The valuable lessons from these visual expeditions inform and enrich her figurative work, deepening her understanding of the possibilities of paint.

Working in this way enables synergy to take place, providing her with an integrated approach to her creative practice.
